Shuichi -when he is a kid- lives with his parents and his uncle in Japan before they had to move to America, where he left his only childhood friend, Kokichi. Years had passed, and ever since he had moved overseas, Kokichi had made some new friends: Maki and Himiko. Their first high school year only started for them, but the murderous group that was once in America named 'The Despairs' had travelled to Japan, and was followed them was none other than the young detectives Shuichi with his non-biological sibling Tsumugi. They both enrolled in the same high school as Kokichi and his friends and things happened. Now how will this go as Shuichi and Kokichi solve things out while Shuichi's on the road to getting the Despairs to justice? He's having trouble believing that and he doesn't feel like he's worth the effort. You want to help him as much as you can so he knows he's loved too, and so he can feel true happiness from loving himself back as well. What starts out platonic becomes a romantic story that runs into the threads of deep despair with only a shred of hope to hang onto. What happens when things become just a little more complicated than a high school romance was meant to be? Will you succeed at winning his heart that you didn't know you were chasing after? Will you and Chiaki be able to save your friends? Will Nagito be able to save you? . . . This book takes place during the Despair Arc and later books continue in chronological order of the series installments.
