Her voice cracks, even though she keeps calm.
"Tell me. Is he ours?"
I don't ask to accuse. I ask like someone starving for truth. Because for the first time in years, I let myself hope. Hope that maybe... just maybe, the life we dreamed of didn't end after all.
But Mon doesn't soften.
Her walls stay high, her silence louder than anything.
Finally, she looks away, voice quiet:
"You were there when the doctor said we lost our baby... weren't you?"
