In the country of Emelan, there are those who are born with the Gift. These people are commonly called mages. The mainstream form of magecraft is Academic Magic, which can be taught at any University across the country; provided you are born with the aptitude. Some mages are born with more of the Gift than most, these mages are capable of Ambient Magic and are born with a natural magical speciality. Unfortunately, magekind has long been divided, due to inferior jealousy and fear of their unpredictable power. In the aftermath of the Ambient Genocide Resurgence, ambient mages, now more than ever, need the sanctuary of the Winding Circle; a temple established to protect and foster ambient mages. But as a wicked blood mage gains power and an unstoppable magical plague spreads across the country of Emelan, ambient mages are hunted in exchange for cures. Mages in the present might not realise that looking to the past for help might have sealed all of their futures.

{INITIAL DRAFT, constructive criticism is welcome and encouraged} {2018 wattys longlist} "I swear on the life of my men, that I will never fall back on my word to bring down this worker of mischief- and bring down this inhumane creature!" The new king preached. The Enchantress has lived in her manor long enough to see the settlement and depletion of many mortal towns, so she isn't surprised when another collective of civilians claim the land near her for themselves. Calling themselves the 'New Mortals', the people seem set on making the Enchantress's life an ongoing misery. She uses her knowledge of the world and its elements to keep intruders away from her home, however, when the newly-elected leader of the settlement promises her demise and a boy claiming to be a researcher makes himself her apprentice, her life deters from its usual path and becomes a constant hassle as she tries all she can to return to a peaceful existence.
