During the waning years of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, the story follows Josefina Amancio, a spirited and intelligent young woman from a humble provincial town. Raised in a family of principled ilustrados who quietly resist colonial oppression, Josefina lives a life of quiet defiance and hidden dreams. But everything changes when she meets Señor Álvaro de Herrera, a reserved yet idealistic Spanish officer newly stationed in the region.
