Startled by the unexpected passionate kiss from Christine Daaé, Erik came to realize that he needed to set her free with Raoul De Chagny from his abominable grasp. 

Christine was given her freedom on that fateful night, forced by her fallen angel of music to leave before the angry mob arrived.
Erik was prepared to give in, to let death come upon him- after escaping from the lair- when he witnessed an attack on Christine and Raoul nearby the burned opera house.

This situation forced him to return, stepping into her life once again, which sooner led the both of them to an unexpected journey of life.
