Iris White knew what death felt like all too well.

The burning pain, the sharp twang, the aching heaviness, every part of it hurt like hell until you finally gave in. Only she knew the pain of having to come back from it, to feel that pain all over again, and fresher than the time before. She was a permanent sacrifice to Lady Death: a godly tribute, a soldier, or a shield; no matter her job, she only served one purpose. To die, over and over and over again.

She adopted the name Mercy early on in her career, the only ARGUS agent to try and keep oppositions alive. Waller looked down on her for it, a soldier willing to die for her team but not kill for them. Something about it was stupid, ignorant. In reality, it was selfish, a tactic of mental survival that she kept to herself. Rick was the only one who understood it, saw a strange semblance of hope in it. She protected him, he killed for her. In turn, they became close, spending every waking moment on missions together. He made her feel protected, safe, like a younger sister again.

When she escaped he made her promise to never make contact with him or ARGUS again. He was punished for his assistance by Waller, dying in Corto Maltese to a friend and a teammate.

Now alone again, Iris finds herself in Evergreen, following a scent left by a late friend. But when she's thrown into another ARGUS mission she doesn't expect to align herself with her polar opposite. A man who kills for any misdemeanour next to a woman who refuses death, united under one cause - to save the world.
