Izzy Belvin, a famous genetic engineer, is about to blast off to the "final" frontier to join the second Martian Colony, where she'll continue creating nutrient-robust insects for farms that will feed the colony and increase its sustainability. For Izzy's remaining days on Earth, her psychopharmacologist best friend, Nakomi, begs her to complete a bucket list before leaving as a means of honoring their friendship. The first bucket list item: going to one of Portland's psychedelic centers together and taking Vivectica ™, a potent psychedelic drug (synthesized by none other than Nakomi) that has become a popular form psyche-therapy. Izzy reluctantly agrees, and when she encounters a hyper-intelligent reptilian entity on her trip, she can't convince herself that he wasn't real. The days are ticking down until her trip, but Izzy, becoming obsessed with the creature, can't get over her feelings that either 1) she's given herself drug-induced psychosis right before her journey to the red planet, or 2) there's something out there, something beyond space... This novel is a wacky trip with some sprinklings of HORTON HEARS A WHO and ANT-MAN, along with lots of palatable metaphysics. ***This is my entry for the 2022 Open Novella Contest.Concluida

**The year is 2036.** After a bioengineered parasitic fungus - *Cordy-13* - mutated and spread beyond control, the United States collapsed. Within three months, 80% of the population was dead or "reanimated." Power grids fell, cities emptied, and survivors now live in scattered settlements or wander the ruins. **Evelyn "Eve" Carter (29)** Former EMT from Denver, 5'7", athletic, green-eyed, scar on her left cheek. Compassionate but hardened, Eve carries deep survivor's guilt. When the outbreak hit Denver General, she fought to save patients until the hospital fell. Her younger brother, Miles (16), vanished that night. Haunted yet driven, Eve searches the Midwest believing he's still alive - a mission that keeps her from collapsing under the weight of her past. **Logan Brooks (35)** Ex-Army Staff Sergeant, 75th Ranger Regiment. 6'1", broad-shouldered, dark hair, beard, and old military tattoos. Stoic and tactical, Logan hides a broken heart - his daughter, Abigail (9), was lost when Atlanta burned. After refusing to follow orders to bomb infected zones, he deserted, vowing never to serve blind authority again. Now, he fights to protect those beside him, seeking redemption one battle at a time. **Marcus "Red" Hensley (23)** A wiry mechanic and survivalist from Tulsa with messy red hair, freckles, and a worn leather jacket. Before the fall, he ran a YouTube channel on survival hacks; after the collapse, he scavenged junkyards and lived off the land. Beneath his cocky humor lies loneliness and fear. When he met Eve in a crumbling Kansas City safe zone, they formed an uneasy alliance. Red wants to prove he's more than lucky - that he can make a difference in a dying world. Together, Eve, Logan, and Red navigate the ruins of a fallen America - bound by loss, survival, and the fragile hope that something human still endures. The people with the new blood type are said to be able to be resistant to most high falls, and also are stronger than the average human being. They are now capturing people with the new blood type, blood type AE positive. You just happen to be one of those people with the rare blood and you drive in an attempt to escape the clutches of the Obelus. The Apocalypse
The ice deep in the north has melted to reveal a new world hidden under the ice. It holds vegetation and animals that seem unworldly when compared to ours, but hidden in the deepest part of this world is another cave with the oldest surviving strains of an ancient bacteria capable of taking host of dead creatures and reanimating them into beasts worse than before. This strain had grown weak over the ages and was nearly extinct, but the human immune system, never being exposed to this, caused the strain to thrive inside its new unexpecting host and spreads out to the world. It starts small, just a speck on the hands of a few people, but soon, it spreads to door handles, pens, books, chairs, things like that. It continues spreading and now has infected its first corpse, the remains of an ant. This new creature comes and spreads to that ant's nest and then to the animals that eat them. Before less than a month passed, the virus had spread to a graveyard in the hidden grottos of the Yukon. This virus, now able to think from the new minds of fresh bodies, can strategize. In only another week, the epidemic had spread to the northern edge of the United States. Spreading further and further in, people began to notice this strange happening. From people disappearing to entire towns popping out of existence, the bacteria continued to spread. To keep order, the governments had those who disappeared erased from existence, but it wasn't enough. The takeover of those long gone happened in less than three weeks and society collapsed. Spreading overseas, it began its removal of life in Europe, but that's a story for another day. We now come to those few remaining settlements in the collapsed U.S, now called The Crumbled Land.
