A soldier of the Earth Defense Force, Sergeant Kenta Ishida, falls in humanity's last desperate battle against the alien primers. His death, a final act of defiance, should have been the end. But fate has other plans. He awakens in a different world - in the body of Youji Itami, a member of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. With no memory of how or why, only instincts and flashes of his past life remain. For over a year, he lives quietly, hiding behind a slacker's smile and diving into otaku culture as a strange form of comfort, trying to find peace in a world that doesn't burn.

But peace is never permanent. When a mysterious Gate opens in the heart of Tokyo and monsters from a fantasy realm spill out into the city, Itami's past begins to awaken. Assigned to lead a recon unit into the new world, he must balance diplomacy with survival, all while questioning his own nature. Is he still the soldier who died to save humanity - or has he become something else entirely? One war has ended, but another is just beginning.
