What if Minos never found Nico? What if, instead, he was taken in by a mortal family, devastated by grief and desperate to escape the world that had killed his family? What if he'd never helped in the Second Titan War, with the demigods barely winning, Hades stepping in at the last moment to give his son a world to return to, if he chose?
What if Nico went to the Underworld, still searching for his sister, returning with Hazel but leaving afterward? What if he hadn't transported the Athena Parthenos, leaving that task to his sister and Reyna? What if, through all this, Nico was living through his own hell?
He didn't need to fight in a war to suffer. He didn't need to go through hell to feel it. He didn't need to keep saving the world and being rejected to understand that pain.
