Charlotte Lane is a lonely girl. No matter how many people she's surrounded by, she always feels like an outcast in her head. She finds solitude in her inability to feel seen by others and worries that she'll stay that way forever, alone and unloved. To feel understood, she scribbles song lyrics in a blue hardcover notebook and hopes that one day she'll feel as whole as the songs make her believe she can be.
Archie Winters has been struggling since the 8th grade. He can't keep his head in the game; his mind always seems to wander. He's failing school, putting himself at risk for losing his spot on the football team.
When Charlotte moves into the small, remote, and rainy town of Astoria, Oregon, she gains popularity quickly. News travels fast in a school housing only five hundred students. On her first day of English class, she meets her neighbor Archie Winters, but accidentally leaves behind her most prized possession: her blue notebook.
Archie, haunted by her thoughts written in lyrics, gives it back to her. As a token of her gratitude, Charlotte decides to help him with his grades and his reading of The Great Gatsby.
