His jaw tightened, that cursed heat beneath his skin rising. He took a step closer, shadows coiling at his heels like hungry smoke. "If you always play with fire, you'll eventually get burned," he murmured.

She didn't flinch. "Maybe I already have."

Something flickered in his chest-an unfamiliar spark. Was it intrigue? Annoyance? Longing?

He stepped closer. So did she. Inches apart, two anomalies beneath a flickering streetlamp. Her gaze bored into his as if peeling back the centuries of sin layered in his bloodline.

"You're not supposed to be here," she said, voice barely above a whisper.

"And yet," he breathed, leaning in, "neither are you."

For the first time in his existence, he didn't know what came next.

And he liked it.
