When bodies start turning up in grotesque, symbolic displays-each one posed like a twisted confession-the city's underbelly begins to twitch. They call him The Ritesman Killer, a name whispered through news reports and stitched into barroom rumors. Nobody knows who he is. But everyone knows what he does: forces his victims to face their own sins before delivering brutal, ritualistic executions.

Nolan Mercer has seen more corpses than most men would dare imagine. As a funeral director, death is just another part of the job. But when too many of these victims pass through his doors, Nolan finds himself tethered to the investigation by threads that no longer feel like coincidence.

Detective Aaron Mills, a long-time friend, brings him snippets from the case, hoping Nolan's morbid expertise might help piece things together. Meanwhile, the investigation stumbles, frustration boils, and the city wants a monster to blame. But in a place where money buries evidence and justice keeps looking the other way, monsters are never in short supply.
