The Subway girl

I was already staring out the window of the train, counting the stains in the tunnels like they meant something, when the doors opened at Vermont/Sunset.

Until I saw her

Sunset filtered through smudged glass, turning the subway into a sepia photograph. She stepped in with hair like fire under water, skin pale as vintage lace, and eyes that trapped mine like a lyric you never wrote down but couldn't forget.
