In the glittering city of Novalis, where towering spires rise above the shadows of Old Chicago, only the elite can afford the luxury of perfection. At the heart of it all is VIVEX-Virtual Intelligence for Verified Emotional Exchange-a powerful biotech firm that transforms real human volunteers into obedient "synths," replacing memory with manufactured affection. But not all synths were willing. Dr. Jonathan Rourke, a brilliant executive at VIVEX, has everything: status, secrecy, and Julie, his graceful, attentive housekeeper. She is flawless. She is his. And she was once his wife. When Julie begins to experience vivid, dreamlike flashes of a life she doesn't remember-tender moments, whispered promises, a kiss in the rain-she is drawn toward a truth just out of reach. As the memories grow stronger, so does her sense of self. Something in her was never truly erased. Now, trapped in a city where trust is a currency and love can be engineered, Julie must quietly unravel the mystery of her past-and the man who rewrote it. But what happens when the one person who holds your heart is the one who stole your life? A haunting tale of longing, control, and the power of memory, Fragments explores what it means to love freely-when everything about you has been designed to obey.

It's been almost a hundred years since Earth's civilizations fell, leaving only ruins and memories. Long before the collapse, they began taking humans, but now, everyone knows who they are and they fear them. The few who manage to return from their captivity tell stories of how these creatures treat humans like animals or children, tending to them like pets or slaves. Most survivors live in hidden cities, avoiding the ancient ruined cities at all costs. But not Jace and his crew. As a group of Stray Humans, they've made the decaying cities their home, roaming the forgotten streets, never staying in one place for long, and bringing all their skills to the table. They are a family, working together to make sure those things, Aliens, never take another human as long as they are near. When the aliens of A.C.R. (Animal Care and Rescue) find a new group of humans wandering the ruins of a large city, they think it will be an easy capture. But they soon learn that these particular humans have more willpower than most. They dodge every trap, disappear around every bend, and even manage to take some of the already captured humans with them. The aliens pity these "little creatures"-they just don't want to leave their home, but Earth is falling apart at the seams, and they are determined to take the stubborn little humans to the safety of one of the mother planets. No matter the cost.
