During the Regency era, in Cambria (North England), Josephine Fairfax is a noblewoman, who by now has passes the marriageable age; in the past she has been engaged to a gentleman, who did not carry out the engagement and now, as it is custom, he is providing her an income as a reparation for her reputation.
After the gentlemen returns in Cambria, Josephine, unexpectedly, receives another proposal by him. A proposal that her family does not approve, given the past outrage to them.
However Mr. Talbot seemed to be honestly changed from the young man he was before.
