Today was unusually good for Miyuki.

She was used to the silence, trapped by her condition as a mute. Her days were often spent inside the four walls of her grandmother's house, with her only hope for sporadic freedom is her frail health. This was her excuse to visit the hospital, and today proved better to go than any other day.

She met a boy.

He was standing under a cherry blossom tree, and unlike anyone she'd ever met before, he understood her without the need for sign language or words. It was a surprise, but not enough to stop her from getting to know a new friend or being grateful for it.

Then there was the book.

It was a journal of some sort, chronicling a romance that dates back from feudal Japan. Inside were entries that narrate a man's great love for a 'spirit maiden' who hasn't spoken one word to him. It was in her silence that her heart was heard.
