Love, In Apartment 12B

Teaser Alert:
I just moved in, hoping to start over. A knock at the door makes me pause. I open it.

"Hi, I'm Rea. I live in 12B," she says, smiling.

"Neil," I reply. "Come in."

She glances at the scattered boxes. "Do you need some help with those?"

"Yeah... that would be great," I say, relieved.

We shift boxes together, the silence easy, almost comforting. When we finish, I offer, "Can I make you some coffee?"

"Sure," she says.

I head to the kitchen. "How many spoons of sugar?" I ask.

"Two," she calls back.

"And milk?" I ask.

"Just a little," she says.

I smile, returning to the living room with the cups... she's gone.

No trace. No sound. Like she was never here.

A cold knot tightens in my stomach. I wasn't alone... was I?
