After leaving Dina and JJ behind to hunt Abby, Ellie returns to an empty home. The silence is unbearable. She tells herself she won't let it end like this - she won't let her mistakes destroy the family she had. Determined, she sets out across the country to find them, no matter how long it takes.
On the road, Ellie drifts into a small group of survivors and even meets Ava, a sharp, stubborn girl who makes her feel something she can't name. But Ellie doesn't let herself get distracted. Late one night, she slips away without goodbye, chasing her only real goal: Dina.

Her search leads her all the way to Minnesota, to a fortified town in Duluth - bigger, stronger, and better protected than Jackson ever was. The reunion is anything but sweet. Dina is furious that Ellie followed her, and Ellie, burning with jealousy, realizes too late that the man - Caleb - isn't who he pretends to be.
