--- Blurb All she ever wanted was simple- Marry before thirty. Two beautiful children. A good job. A loving, wealthy husband. But life looked at Folashade and said no. At thirty, she was still under her parents' roof. Since NYSC, the job hunt had been a slow heartbreak-interviews that led nowhere, promises that vanished before they began. Until at last, a break: a receptionist job at a modest but busy hotel. All Folajimi ever wanted was peace- Freedom from a father's decree: "You're not leaving this house until you bring me a woman to marry." Freedom from relatives whose words fell like heavy rain, soaking away his quiet. For her, it was the first day at work. For him, it was just another day in the hotel. But love isn't always born in grand gestures- Sometimes, it's in the stillness of a quiet lobby, In the curve of a smile meant only for you, In the deep breath of knowing someone sees you... and stays. ---

Kulthum is going through something. It could be a hormonal shift, another round of her "rebellious teen phase" even though she's now twenty-two, or an identity crisis. Whatever it is, Kulthum has changed. She can feel it, and everyone can see it, but no one can cite a reason for it-including her. When Kulthum comes home from her third unattained university degree, lugging more than suitcases, her parents have had enough. They decide to do what every African parent living in the United Kingdom has once threatened to do. They ship her back home to Nigeria. With a one-way first-class ticket, Kulthum finds herself stranded in the busy city of Lagos, stuck with a family she knows nothing about and surrounded by her culture, which feels completely foreign to her. Her parents hope her year abroad will cause her to have a change of heart...but Kulthum meets a man who might steal it. - - - - First Published September 28th 2024.
