Katrina "Kat" Vineal, a kind and selfless girl, endures years of escalating mental and physical abuse from her mother. The night of her high school graduation, after a lifetime of torment, Kat finally snaps. During another argument, she strikes her mother with a fire poker, killing her. Driven by a cold, desperate resolve, she buries the body in a secluded patch of woods and enlists in the Navy the next day. She goes on to have a decorated military career, ultimately dying in battle.
