"you come to a lot of angel's games?" billie asked finally, glancing sideways at her.

"when i can," mariah said. "we've been friends for a while. she's... one of those people who always makes you want to show up."

billie nodded slowly, like she understood exactly what that meant. "yeah. she's good people."

another pause, but this one felt different. softer.

mariah looked down the street, her hands tucked into the pockets of her jacket, but she could still feel billie's presence right there - the warmth of her shoulder just inches away, the faint scent of her perfume mixing with the cool night air.

"earlier," billie said, her voice quieter now, "you really didn't know it was me?"

mariah's mouth curved into a small smile. "for a second? no. but in my defense, you were wearing that hat all sideways like some kind of disguise."

billie's laugh was low and unhurried. "guess it worked."
