Delwyn of Ristead doesn't want to get married -- not now, and especially not to a man old enough to be her grandfather. When her father, the duke, surprises Delwyn with an arranged marriage, she runs away instead. Travelling across the border to the demon kingdom of Chthonia, she reinvents herself as Delwyn Gawer, an orphan human struggling to make ends meet.
