"The city of Nergui sits nestled against a great tree, its upper city and castle climbing the trunk in worship of the nameless god once believed to be slumbering inside. Though many traditions from the old ways still linger, only one law remains sacred under the Crown: magic must never be used.
Unless, of course, you swear fealty to the crown and become one of the Clocktower Watchmen that serves under the royal family, otherwise, you become known as a Variant; Someone who awakens with power, and will be hunted by The Watchers until they can grant you swift death.
Everlyn is neither, but she stands on the side of the Variants.-
Club Ophidian, located in the lower city, scattered amongst the roots of the great tree, is home to the Project Icarus. A group of Variants who want nothing more than to protect others from the crown and grant them a new life, one where they don't have to hide in fear, and Everlyn's adoptive mother, Annalyse, is the one who founded it all.
Still the newest member of Project Icarus, she finds herself journeying outside the boundary with her friend to save a young variant, an adventure that sends her spiraling after stumbling across a masked figure in the wilds, and being attacked by a creature she's never seen before.
As she struggles to make sense of it all, Annalyse hands her an unexpected responsibility; Mentoring the enigmatic stranger with a voice that haunts her, and a presence that unsettles her in ways she can't explain.
The further she goes to protect everyone around her, the more the city's secrets begin spilling out. Who is the nameless god the city worships? Why is magic illegal? What are the nightmares she can't escape? Why does the mask figure appear around every Variant they save, and by the time she finds out, can she still hold on to who she is?
