Elijah has lost his loved ones, again. 
He was used to this, really, but there was a small chance that this time they wouldn't come back, that's the scary part. 

The blip took lots of people, Elijah didn't know that it would include the people he considered his family. 

What do you do in this situation? Becoming a mercenary shouldn't be one of those options, did Elijah listen? No, not at all.
