It's cold, but that's not what I feel. I'm hot despite the car windows being open. The wind hits my face. I haven't cried yet. Maybe I'm waiting until I feel safe. When I arrive in front of her house, she's there, wearing something not at all suited for this weather. I park hastily. I rush out. I run straight into her arms and start crying. Her arms wrap around me, holding me tight. I feel safe. A continent of violence and homophobia.

Happily Ever After Him, the sequel to After Him. "You're okay," I whispered, wrapping my arms around him, holding him as tightly as he needed. "I've got you." His cries slowed, his breath hitching in soft, shuddering gasps. I could feel the tension melting from his little body, the way he pressed closer, as if making sure I was really here. Maggie lingered in the doorway, watching, hesitant. "I'll get a towel," she murmured before slipping away. I kissed the top of Alfie's head, still cradling him against me. "You found me, buddy. I'm right here." And somehow, that was all he needed. Achieved #1 in #autismawareness
