The famous Ogologos High-so perfect that even perfection dims in its glory-hides a secret no one knows. A hidden organization, The Syndicate, is ruled by a shadow king: Angus Balfour. No one has ever seen him, no one knows what he looks like, and the name "Angus Balfour" does not even exist in the school's records. Yet, he is there every day, among everyone, silently observing and plotting his grand stage drama.

The pawns in his game? The students themselves. Like puppets controlled by an invisible puppeteer, they move while he watches from the shadows. Angus is at the school only because he loves to play with the lives of the innocent. The 16-year-old boy, born into unimaginable riches, is preparing to step into society-and what he does at Ogologos High is only a glimpse of what he intends to unleash upon the world.

Thomas Baker and Cacey Summers, unaware that they have been chosen for the master puppeteer's next show, enter Ogologos High thinking this school will be different. At first, it feels dreamlike, almost as if someone has been reading their minds. This is how school should be, they believe. But soon they are caught in Angus's traps, their lives directed by his hidden hand from the very beginning.

The only mystery that offers hope is the Jade Rings: one belonging to Tom, the other to Cacey. Neither knows the other has one, yet the rings are magically connected. Soon, these so-called "Rings of Fate" may open the path to another world.
