Ryan has a fear of the dark. He has no friends and is tormented every day by the same people since his fear became known. Towards the end of eighth grade, he starts to fight back, earning him a chance to be cool. But when it all goes wrong, he starts to befriend things that are not seen by other people.

With the second year of Life Academy starting off, Tori notices that something seems... off about Ryan. Everytime she tries to confront him, he finds an excuse and avoids her or the topic. She's worried about her friend, and when she tried to fall back on the knowledge she knew of his home life, she discovered something heartbreaking.
