The first season of Supernatural begins with tragedy and an uneasy reunion. Years earlier, Mary Winchester was killed by a demon, and John Winchester disappeared into a life of hunting monsters. As children, Sam and Dean were raised on the road in this dangerous lifestyle-but they weren't alone. Luna Singer, the daughter of Bobby Singer, was part of their world too.
Luna had joined the Winchesters at age 13, after Bobby-concerned for her safety following her mother's death-allowed John to take her along while he hunted. She became Dean's sparring partner, Sam's confidant, and the closest thing to family outside of the brothers themselves. Unlike the boys, however, Luna was split between two lives: boarding school in London, where Bobby sent her during calmer years, and the brutal world of hunting whenever John pulled her back in. This left her with a sharp wit, a British accent that teased her tongue when she got emotional, and a restless, fiery personality.
When Supernatural opens, Sam is trying to live a normal life at Stanford, and Luna is torn-she's been drifting between her father Bobby's scrapyard and the occasional hunt, but always keeping tabs on the Winchesters. She and Sam share a long, complicated bond, an undercurrent of something unspoken that has always simmered beneath their friendship. Dean, meanwhile, sees Luna as both his ally and his rival-a woman who could fight, banter, and drink him under the table, but who also carried a piece of Sam's heart that Dean never quite knew what to do with.
