A Heart Still Beating

Grace lost everything long before she even had a clue what it was like to have something. Love was an unknown entity to her. When she was eight years old, the one man who was meant to care for her, the one who was meant to be her father-sold her off as if she was nothing more than an unwanted burden.
For years she waited. Waited for footsteps that never came back, for arms that never wrapped around, for words of reassurance that were never said. She promised herself he would return, that someday he would remember her and call her his daughter. But days came into years, and hope lost its shape.
At twenty-five now, Grace had nothing but the remnants of her childhood. Isolation was her closest friend. Suffering was the language most spoken by her heart.
