The candle burned low, spilling gold across the edges of his face. He stood too near, close enough that I could see the curve of his mouth tilt when he spoke.

"You've avoided me all week." His voice was quiet, almost thoughtful, but the weight of it pinned me in place.

"I've had reason." My reply was steady, my hands curling into my skirts.

"Reason," he repeated, as though tasting the word. His gaze didn't waver, dark eyes catching mine and holding fast. "Or fear?"

I should have stepped back. I should have said something sharp enough to cut the moment in two. Instead, my pulse betrayed me, leaping when his fingers brushed the doorframe just behind my shoulder.

"Tell me, Viella," he murmured, low enough that only I could hear, "what is it you fear more-me, or yourself?"
