The campus of Westbridge University looked like a postcard at night - golden streetlights reflecting off rain-slicked sidewalks, ivy climbing red brick buildings, and the occasional echo of laughter from a dorm window. But beneath the idyllic surface, something hunted.

Mia Carson zipped her hoodie against the late October chill and stepped out of the library. Her footsteps were deliberate, her eyes scanning the glossy sidewalk in front of her, though she didn't need to look. She already knew.

He was behind her. As always.
Twenty paces back, blending with shadows like a whisper. He wore the same weathered trench coat, the same nondescript sneakers. Never close enough to be obvious, but never far enough to lose her.

Caleb Finch. He thought he was a ghost.

But Mia had seen him the first night.

Most girls would panic. Run. Report it. But Mia had done none of those things.

She had simply smiled and whispered, "Finally."

She felt it before she saw it-the prickle of eyes on her skin, the unsettling sensation of being watched, even in a crowd. The feeling had started months ago, subtle at first, just a hint of unease that she brushed aside as paranoia. But as days turned into weeks, the sensation grew more intense, more insistent, like a shadow that followed her everywhere. Her friends called her dramatic, her mother worried she was overworking herself. But she knew better. It wasn't just her imagination. He was always there-just out of sight, lurking in the edges of her world, a dark figure woven into the fabric of her life. She caught glimpses of him in reflections, a fleeting silhouette in the corner of her vision. She could feel his presence, a heavy weight pressing on her chest, tightening her breath. He watched her with a hunger that burned in his eyes, an obsession that consumed him. She didn't know his name, didn't know his face, but she could feel the intensity of his gaze even when she was alone. It was a strange sensation, knowing someone wanted her so badly it bordered on madness. Her every move was marked, every breath counted. She was no longer living in a city, but in a cage-a cage he had built, without bars or locks, yet impossible to escape. He had chosen her, marked her as his own, and now there was no turning back. She's his obsession, and he's her obsessive stalker. What she didn't know was why. Why her? Why now? And what would he do if she tried to run? The answer was simple-he would never let her go

The Broken Mirror A novel Damien W. Byrnes Prologue: The Shattered Reflection The sky, if that's what it could still be called, looked like torn paper-veins of sickly purple bleeding into black. Mira blinked. The world around her shifted, unfocused, like an old photograph dissolving in water. She had no idea how she ended up here or where "here" even was. She felt as though she had been dropped into a nightmare she couldn't wake from, where time crawled like a wounded animal. Her reflection in the cracked glass before her didn't feel right. The face was hers, but not hers. The eyes looked haunted, like something had gnawed at her soul and left only fragments behind. And as the world around her crumbled, so did she. --- Copyright 2024 Damien W. Byrnes All rights reserved. Tears are now forming in my eyes but I shake my head and get rid of them. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Katherine White is a normal 17 year old girl who's still in high school.
