We made the pact when we were twelve. "If we're both single at thirty," Avery said, voice sticky with soda and summer heat, "we'll marry each other. Just so we're not...alone." It was a joke. "I still never said it. And besides that, you're not listing the basics of the relationship. We need rules and agreements. When is it over?" "We'll have a deal," I told her. "You commit wholeheartedly to us being in a fake relationship, and I'll continue to tutor you." "That's great," She said impassively. "But when does this end?" She looked between us. "When I'm sitting at a hundred, or when you win your girlfriend back?" "I'm not necessarily saying I want her back," I said. "We're just doing this for the fun of it. I can't really put a timing on it." She was quiet a moment before impulsively agreeing. "Fine," She gave a shrug. "Although, I will have to say, I feel bad for you." "Why do you feel bad for me?" "I can't be your Juliet."
