(Insert from Chapter 32)
Owen and Cole had left no survivors. Every one of Vladimir's men was butchered, their bodies sprawled across the dirt, the grounds drowned in red. And when no one gave up his location, they turned on the staff.
Now Owen stood over the maids, his knife still dripping, his entire body smeared with blood. He looked less like a soldier and more like a monster, wild, unchained. Two women already lay at his feet, their throats cut clean. The others screamed and shook, pressed against the wall as Cole scoured the houses, searching for any place Freya might have been hidden.
"That's enough," I said again, lower this time, my voice iron but firm.
Owen spun toward me, his chest heaving, eyes unrecognizable. He came forward like a beast ripped from its cage. "What the fuck's your problem?" he barked, his voice raw, venomous.
I'd seen blood before. I'd spilled oceans of it myself. But something in him unsettled me. This wasn't the Owen I knew. This was something else, something darker.
"Slitting women's throats isn't going to bring her back," I said quietly, trying to drag him back from the edge.
