Being Hispanic, it's hard for James Potter to find people in England who speak Spanish. Imagine his shock when he tried to tell his friends 'Perra' meant a strong person, and Remus Lupin caught him. Remus' cousin is a Spanish girl with a bit of a temper. The moment Remus told the boys about how the girl slapped a boy for him over the summer while he was in Spain, James was infatuated with what the girl was like in person. But he would never meet her, so there was no point in addressing his little crush.
When Mariela Abarca faces expulsion for her actions toward a teacher, she knows that being closer to her cousin is for the best. He would keep her from doing it again, because Remus almost always had a level head. Gaining another best friend who would do just the same wasn't on the cards for Mariela, but when James Potter comes tumbling into her life, she doesn't complain.
