May just wants a normal high school life-homework, hanging out with friends, maybe a little teenage drama here and there. What she doesn't want is her mom, Opal, tagging along and constantly being mistaken for her sister. It's not that Opal is embarrassing (well, okay, sometimes), it's that she looks exactly May's age. With her bright blue hair, bubbly personality, and wardrobe that sparkles like the night sky, Opal stands out everywhere she goes-while May, with her darker, edgier style, would much prefer to blend into the background. Their mother-daughter dynamic is a recipe for chaos: Opal insists on helping May with school projects, shopping trips, and even love life advice, while May just wants to prove she's the responsible one. From hilarious misunderstandings at the grocery store ("Wait-you're the mom?!") to awkward parent-teacher conferences where nobody believes Opal isn't a transfer student, the two navigate daily life balancing their clashing personalities. A heartwarming slice-of-life comedy about growing up, standing out, and learning that sometimes the most unconventional family bonds shine the brightest-Stars and Shadows follows May and Opal as they discover that being mistaken for sisters might not be such a bad thing after all.
