The story follows Iyed, a young man in a rigid, matriarchal theocracy where a man's spiritual worth is physically manifested by his ability to get an erection ("rise") in the presence of female authority. Iyed suffers from erectile dysfunction, a condition known as "Suqoot al-Qamah" (The Falling of the Minaret), which is considered a profound spiritual and moral failure. Shamed and disowned, he is sent to the formidable Sheikha Fatina al-Zalzala, a master who specializes in "correcting" such men. However, her method is not to cure him, but to systematically dismantle his identity, his will, and his very concept of manhood. Through a long and brutal series of rituals, she transforms his "failure" into a new, sacred form of being: one of absolute submission, softness, and receptivity. His body becomes a living text, and his impotence is reframed as the ultimate form of holiness.
