Ryan thought moving to Ashford would let him close a door on the past; instead he found a town that kept picking at the scab. Raised by his sister Melanie after their parents' deaths, he takes a quiet job at the city archives and settles into an old mill on the edge of town, where the woods press close and the nights hold the leftover cold of autumn. When a string of bodies turns up around Ashford, each death is written off as misfortune or coincidence; Ryan, who catalogues other people's histories for a living, begins to see patterns the police miss. His curiosity becomes an investigation driven as much by grief as by logic, pulling him through small towns, forgotten records, and the shadowed paths behind the mill. Into that careful life comes a new neighbor who paints the woods and speaks in stories; their tentative friendship becomes something deeper, a fragile shelter against loneliness. As Ryan follows the clues and pieces together lives the town would rather forget, his search for answers forces him to confront what he thought he knew about trust, love, and the stories people tell about themselves. Gloomy, intimate, and quietly tense, this is a novel about the ways we try to map other people's lives-and the dangerous gaps between the maps and the truth.

This story is written and owned by Annika Dane (also posting on Royal Road) He was supposed to leave. She wasn't supposed to matter this much. Falling in love wasn't part of the plan. Brian's ready to disappear. Burned out, restless, and convinced he's wasting his life, he's already packed his escape plan. No attachments, no mess. Then there's Rebecca. Quiet, stubborn, and impossible to ignore. What starts as a distraction turns into late-night talks, shared playlists, and a connection Brian never expected. But opening up isn't easy when doubts and fears get in the way. Between misunderstandings, old insecurities, and the weight of everything left unsaid, they'll have to figure out how much of themselves they're willing to risk. He reads people easily but struggles to read himself. She keeps her feelings tucked away where no one can reach. And somehow, in the middle of all that, something real begins to take shape. A slow-burn college romance about messy feelings, unexpected connection, and the terrifying risk of letting someone truly see you.
