The Cold Ones Are Watching

Elara Reinhardt owned every hallway she walked. Platinum curls framed her face like a crown, brown skin glowing under the Academy's chandeliers. Laughter followed her sometimes sharp, sometimes cruel. She snapped at teachers, tossed homework answers from the corner of her lip gloss smile, and ruled her cheer squad like royalty. But behind the glitter and noise was a girl aching for her father's attention, hiding loneliness with designer bags and loud comebacks.

Sepharina "Stephy" Montavus was her opposite. Tall, pale, with strange eyes that shifted like storm clouds, she wore hoodies instead of pearls. She spoke little, observed much, and carried a weight in her silence that unsettled her classmates. Elara called her "cold," the other kids whispered "weird." Yet there was strength in Stephy's stillness, something that didn't break no matter how sharp the insults.

Their worlds collided daily queen bee and ghost, locked in a rivalry neither fully understood. But whispers of sirens, sealed gates, and shadows growing beyond the Academy walls promised change. The city outside was sick, and something rotten was moving closer. Soon, popularity wouldn't matter. Nor silence. In the ruin that waited, only the bond they denied might keep them alive.
