While in England, she falls in love with a boy named James Peterson. Upon returning to Mississippi, James fails to keep his promise to write to Kate. Instead, his cousin John, who is also in love with Kate, begins writing to her, pretending to be James. When Kate visits James, she is met with rudeness and cruelty, leaving her confused and heartbroken. In an attempt to escape her pain, Kate purchases an abandoned cabin in the woods. Upon discovering how James mistreated Kate, John sets out to find her. He eventually confesses to writing the letters, causing Kate to initially be angry with him.
