Prologue- The Still Water The lake was quiet that evening, its surface a mirror reflecting the fading sky. Lainey stood at the edge, her arms wrapped around herself, as though holding in all the words she had never spoken. The world around her carried on-the rustle of wind in the trees, the call of a bird disappearing into dusk-but inside, there was only silence. The kind of silence that pressed heavy against the chest, that made every breath feel borrowed. She thought of the nephew she had never met, a boy whose name had lived only in whispers. A life gone before it began, leaving behind a shadow that stretched through her family and lodged in her heart. She had no photographs to hold, no memories to replay-only the ache of absence, sharp and unrelenting. At times, she wondered if grief this private even counted, if mourning someone she had never touched was selfish, invisible. But standing by the water, she felt the truth stir within her: love does not need time to be real. It only needs a place to live. The wind shifted, rippling the surface of the lake, scattering her reflection. And in that moment, lainey whispered a promise-not yet knowing how she would keep it, not yet knowing that love, unexpected and steadfast, would one day show her the way.
