With an inarticulate shout of fear, Shang threw himself into the river and swam out to where he had seen Ping disappear under the horse. The other men had caught up, then, and were working to calm the frantic animal and get it to shallower, calmer waters. The wagon and all the supplies it carried were lost to the river. Shang dove beneath the surface and began to search frantically in the dark, churning water for any sign of Ping.
