Betty is 35, British, and broken. Her life in the UK has crumbled-no job, no family, no future. So when distant relatives in Atlantic City offer her a place to stay and a chance to start over, she grabs it with both hands.

But life in the States isn't as straightforward as it seems.

Her relatives are larger-than-life, deeply rooted in tradition but full of surprises. She soon finds work as a house cleaner for a successful couple with a beautiful family-hard-working, picture-perfect, and polite. Too perfect.

Because behind their closed doors, nothing is what it seems.

And as Betty uncovers layers of secrets, both in their home and her new one, she starts to realise that the past she thought she'd escaped from might not be done with her yet.
