Four years after barrister Merritt Lingard disappeared without a trace, Detective Maren Hadlow is reassigned to the newly formed Department Q-where an old case, an old friend and everything she thought she'd left neatly buried are waiting for her.

Carl Mørck has survived being shot, the collapse of his marriage and a career quietly shoved into a basement. The last thing he needs is Maren Hadlow turning up to remind him of the man he used to be.

Unfortunately, Maren has never been particularly interested in what Carl needs.

And when their investigation into Merritt's disappearance begins attracting the attention of someone who would rather the past remain buried, Maren and Carl are forced to confront something far more dangerous than either expected: some things don't disappear simply because you stop looking at them.
