Just a knight...yeah, that's it, just a normal human in a town who became a knight in a High-Fantasy, High-magic, Mid-Tech, normal fantasy stuff, with dark magic not really being and issue since there was a Deal Made by the Fell Plane(aka Purgatory), City of Fire (aka Hell) The Material Plane (aka just the place where most things live), Wild Lands (where Elementals live and most magic leaks out from), and Ethereal Plane (aka Heaven), to not interfere with one another and only to be broken to benefits the common inhabitants of the plane Which Lead to the Creation of Casters of Magic and 4 Main Classes of Magic Sorceries for Wizards and Sorcerers Incantations for messengers/preachers and commonly by Clerics Smites for the Oathsworn and Blessed Paladins and rarely Cleric Dedicated to their Faith And Alchemy for Artificers and for the common man (like our Halberdier) Here are the differences Sorceries need a wand or staff or the caster itself as a catalyst Incantations need a seal blessed by a Preacher or Saint and Dipped in holy Water and dried near an active congregation of faith Smites need a Paladin Or Rarely a cleric to be Close and or Tied to their chosen god and Let their Divine Power Run through them and through their weapon as a catalyst and then there is Alchemy aka Fake Magic where Alchemists, Artificers, and sometimes guards or knights will use compounds to imbue their armaments with certain properties like flame damage, poison, or just imbuing random stuff on the ground with Blast Powder to made small throwable bombs
