Josephine "Josie" Simmons has always harbored a quiet crush on Maxwell Torres-the artsy, sketchbook-carrying boy in her literature class who always seems lost in his own world. She'd never admit it out loud, not even to her best friend Niki (short for Nicole Rodriguez), until one impulsive truth-or-dare game forces her to write him a love letter.
But when Niki takes it upon herself to "help" and deliver the letter, she mixes things up. Instead of reaching Max, the note ends up in the hands of Johnny Henderson-Josie's next-door neighbor and sworn enemy. Johnny, the cocky playboy known for breaking hearts and teasing Josie every chance he gets, suddenly sees her differently.
Meanwhile, Max receives Niki's version of a love letter (meant to spice things up), and assumes Josie wrote it. To her shock, he admits he's liked her for a while too.
Now Josie is caught between:
*Max, the boy she thought she wanted, who's suddenly within reach.
*Johnny, the boy she swore to hate, who starts showing unexpected depth behind his charm.
To complicate things further, Josie's younger friend Stephanie (a smart, meddling sophomore kid she babysits ) notices the triangle forming and can't help but add her own observations, advice, and occasional chaos.
