"A Watercolor Family Portrait" is a prequel to "Ninjago: Amplified." The story is told through the lens of Onyx, a merlopian vigilante who fled her old home in the Endless Sea. It details the unfortunate events that led up to her eventual leaving, back when she was known as Kalani.

AWFP covers themes of womanhood and gender identity. The act of feeling comfortable in one's own skin can be quite difficult, especially in a world that is so quick to make assumptions and generalizations. This is a story that incapsulates that struggle: the harrowing journey of finding one's self.
