𝐌𝐄𝐈 𝐊𝐈𝐌𝐔𝐑𝐀 didn't care about the fireflies' cause and she wouldn't pretend she did. she'd joined for her brother and after he died, she stayed in lieu of him. because she knew it was what he would have wanted her to do. for her to help fight for a 'good cause'.

she didn't care. not one bit. about anything they did. not until marlene asked her to keep an eye on ellie, anyway. she still had no interest in the what the fireflies were doing or what they needed. but the headstrong, stubborn girl reminded her so much of her brother.

so when marlene tells her she's hiring some smugglers to get ellie out of the qz and to some other fireflies in the hopes of reverse engineering a cure, mei is quick to offer herself up to accompany them.

it didn't occur to her that her attachment to the girl would prove a problem. it also didn't occur to her that she might end up actually liking the grumpy smuggler accompanying them.
