In a world beset by toxic miasma and wandering monsters, humanity fights for survival by harnessing the protective power of myrrh, a healing liquid produced by five myrrh trees scattered throughout the land. Curt, a young man newly turned 21 and eager for adventure, sets out with the other members of his village's crystal caravan to collect the myrrh necessary to protect his hometown for the coming year. What begins as a routine journey quickly becomes a novel-sized quest as Curt and his friends find themselves caught in the middle of political intrigue and a dark new menace.

Cry of the Lost is a fanfiction novel that takes place in a world loosely based on the original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles video game, with additional elements added from the Final Fantasy video game series in general.
