The sun had barely climbed over the water, but the air already hummed with heat and salt. Summer on the Cut never waited for anyone.

I was halfway down the dock when I spotted them. John B balancing on the boat's edge, Pope arguing about gas money, JJ flashing that reckless grin. Same chaos, different summer.

And me? I told myself this year would be different. No trouble. No heartbreak.

Then JJ looked up, grinning like he knew I was lying.
