Chandler Ducrot has spent seventeen years in the foster care system alongside his older brother. Since the age of ten, he has found himself entangled in frequent brushes with the law due to running away from less-than-desirable foster homes. One night, he is picked up by the police and placed in a foster home that is described to him as the best emergency placement anyone at the station has ever seen. He discovers that his new foster parents are both employed at a prestigious boarding school where his foster father serves as the dean of students, and his foster mother teaches English. Now living at the boarding school, Chandler finds himself facing an entirely new set of challenges.

Larke Leighton is assigned to mentor Chandler. Sent to Cresthaven Academy by her parents after their divorce, it is the only place that feels like home now.

While both struggle to open up due to their troubled pasts, their shared experiences gradually create an unbreakable bond. Chandler views the school as a temporary refuge until he can break free from the system, while Larke is terrified to graduate and be alone in the world.

As their connection deepens, Chandler and Larke navigate their respective challenges, discovering that love and trust can heal wounds that once seemed permanent.

Growing up in a toxic environment, sixteen-year-old Jay Foster has always had psychological problems, coupled with a quick temper. But one night something happens which finally pushes him over the edge, and as a result, he leaves his house the next morning with two things: his mother's gun and a plan. Living with a neglectful and drug addicted mother wasn't easy for Jay, and it definitely didn't help that his father abandoned the family while he was still a child. He harbored a hatred toward his parents, and that hatred extended to almost everyone and everything around him, producing a very troubled and damaged young kid. As Jay enters high school, he becomes very intrigued with one of his classmates. Kind of obsessed, actually. Her name: Mikayla Keeler. Mikayla is very unique, and like Jay, she doesn't seem to fit in with her contemporaries. Instead, the two of them keep each other company, and their friendship very quickly escalates into a romantic and intimate relationship. Despite having Mikayla, Jay's troubles continue to burden him. He and Mikayla are fighting habitually, his home life is still unbearable, and his time at school is hardly any better, made worse by a bully named Calvin. Their mutual dislike of one another leads to a lot of hostility, routinely leading to Jay being sent to his school's principal. One confrontation in particular goes much too far, resulting in Jay's expulsion from school. With everything seemingly piling up, Jay is very close to his breaking point, and late one night he is blindsided by the unthinkable, pushing him much too far and effectively planting in his mind a cruel and horrific plan for revenge.

When Dani agrees to drive a drunken Shane Olsen home, she assumes it's just a simple favor-one night, one ride, nothing more. But that single act pulls her into a world she never expected. As she learns more about Shane, she begins to uncover the pain and secrets he keeps buried beneath his carefully crafted exterior. In the process, she starts to see the cracks in her own life, realizing how much she has been merely surviving rather than truly living. Shane has spent years enduring neglect and abuse, learning the hard way that the people who appear perfect often hide the darkest truths. With Dani, he finds someone who sees beyond his mistakes, someone who challenges him to believe he's capable of more. But their relationship is anything but easy-tangled in struggles, unspoken fears, and the weight of the past, they fight to avoid becoming the very people who hurt them. As they grow closer, both Dani and Shane must decide if they can break free from the cycles of pain and regret that defined their parents' lives-or if they are doomed to repeat them.
